How to choose the right Tri-Clamp Gaskets
for a safe and leak-free system

Proper installation & certified gaskets
for a reliable, safe system

Tri-Clamp gaskets play a critical role in ensuring leak-free, hygienic connections for pumps, filters, and fittings in industries like biotechnology,
and pharmaceuticals. Selecting the right gasket for your process is key to maintaining system integrity and preventing
contamination.

To achieve a secure and reliable seal, it’s essential to choose high-quality, certified gaskets (FDA, USP Class VI), select the correct material, ensure proper installation, and perform regular inspections of your Tri-Clamp fittings.
By following these best practices, you can maintain a safe, efficient, and compliant work environment.

What type of gaskets

We can deliver a wide variety of sanitary seals and gaskets. These hygienic seals are used widely in the biotech, pharmaceutical, dairy, food & beverage, industrial and semi conductor industries to seal clamp connections for sanitary applications. There are gaskets without or with flanges (to aid in installation), as it can be seen in the picture on the left.

Why is the proper installation of clamp connections so important?

The answer is simple, if clamp connections are not correctly installed and maintained, they do not seal properly. Correct inspection and maintenance procedures are equally important to avoid problems caused by ineffective clamp connections, including product contamination, leakage, and costly downtime. Here, we outline the proper methods for clamp connection inspection, installation, and maintenance and discuss why they are vital to your process equipment operations.

Misalignment center line

The alignment of the ferrules is critical. The clamp cannot be used to pull pipes and components into alignment.

Misalignment angle

Here ferrules are improperly aligned. One side of the gasket is over-compressed and the other side has a dangerous gap. Being off even by the slightest angle can be problematic. The maximum allowed misalignment is only 2 to 3 degrees.

The gap between the ferrule faces

Ideally, to minimize pipe stress, you should start with a gap that is the same width as the gasket.

Different tube sizes, which Gasket

When joining a 1.5″ to a 1″ tube, if a 1″ gasket is used, you run risk of unsanitary conditions around the unclamped section of a 1″ gasket loosely held against the face of the 1.5″ tube flange. The larger of the two tubes determines the correct gasket size.

Single Pin Clamp

Single Pin Clamp (2 Segments):

The most common and cost-effective clamp for general applications.
Double Pin Clamp

Double Pin Clamp (2 Segments):

More flexible than the single pin, making installation easier in tight spaces. Both have similar pressure ratings and clearances.
Three-Segment Clamps

Three-Segment Clamps:

Provide evenly distributed clamping pressure and slightly higher service pressure ratings than two-segment clamps.
Heavy-Duty Clamps

Heavy-Duty Clamps:

A bolted, non-hinged design that withstands twice the pressure of hinged clamps, ideal for high-pressure or permanent applications.

Installation & Maintenance

Clamp jaws should never touch after tightening, as this indicates improper compression. Causes may include a damaged clamp, over-tightening, or incorrect sizing. Regular inspections ensure clamps maintain proper torque, especially in high-pressure steam lines where thermal cycling affects gasket compression. Over time, gaskets degrade due to aging or vibration, potentially leading to leaks. Scheduled maintenance, including gasket replacement and vibration checks, ensures safe and reliable process connections.
